Soil Mix Amendments

A soil mix is everything to a plant - it can determine whether it will flourish or perish. There are soil mixes out there with various ingredients or amendments - tropical, succulent, and outside plants - that it is hard to figure out what the right soil is. Each plant, just like people, are unique and have different needs.

After more than five years of working with plants, I’ve learned a thing or two about soils and what has helped plants to thrive… of course, after helping to unalive many of them. Even now, without proper research of how to upkeep a new plant, I can manage to still kill one or two. But with each mistake, comes an opportunity to learn and grow.

My soil mixes for indoor plants consist of Fox Farm Ocean Forest, Orchid Bark, Perlite, and Worm Castings. This is a chunky and aroid mix that helps to ensure well-draining, moist, and full of nutrients. Fox Farms Ocean Forest is a luscious mix of composted forest organic material, sphagnum peat moss, loamy sand, and earthworm (I add extra). Perlite helps to improve soil quality, while orchid bark helps to provide moisture, drainage, and air to the roots through sphagnum moss, pine bark, coco fibres, and charcoal.

Note: soil mix changes if dealing with cacti and desert plants.
